Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC) Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was jointly established by Shanghai Municipal People's Government and US Project HOPE. The center, situated on Dong Fang Road, Pudong, Shanghai and with an area of about 7 acres, a floor space of more than 50,000 square meters and a capacity of 500 designated beds, is a state-of-the-art children’s medical facility integrating medical care, scientific research and education. Its first-class facilities and the most sophisticated medical equipment ensure SCMC’s quality medical care for children from Shanghai, and throughout China.

SCMC boasts a complete system of pediatric specialties including internal medicine, hematology and oncology, cardiology, development and behavior in children (child healthcare), surgery, orthopedics, cardio-thoracic surgery, anesthesia, ophthalmology, ENT and neck surgery, stomatology, dermatology, Chinese traditional medicine, imaging diagnostic center, laboratory diagnostic center, pharmacy and special medical service with general clinics, specialist consultation, special service clinics and clinics for complex and difficult diseases.

The center, with a strong medical and technical staff and the most advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment in China, is an over 700 million yuan pediatric facility. As a landmark project of Shanghai’s social development during the period of the “Ninth Five-year Plan”, and Shanghai’s key construction project, listed as one of the 10 great deeds implemented by Shanghai Municipality, and, also US Project Hope’s largest overseas collaborative program, SCMC has become the highlight of the century with huge investment. Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin calligraphed the name for Shanghai Children’s Medical Center; Hillary Clinton, former US First Lady, cut the ribbon for the opening of the center on June 30, 1998.

SCMC was at the top of the list of “Shanghai’s Best Architectural Constructions of New China for 50 Years” and “the Fine Construction Projects of Ten-Year Development of Pudong New Area”. The departments of Cardiology and Cardio-thoracic Surgery, Hematology and Oncology, Development and Behavior in Children have outstanding. SCMC is also home to WHO Collaborative Center for Neonatal Healthcare, Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for Pediatric Cardiology, Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for Pediatric Malformation Rectification, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Research Center and China’s first Screening Center for Neonatal Hearing Disorders.

SCMC organizes or participates in such charity events as “Children’s Health Festival”, “Children’s Safety Week”, “Love Under Blue Sky” and “Sunshine Activity”. The activities have not only established closer relationship between the hospital and the public but also introduced them to new health concepts.

We have friends all over the world. High ranking officials from the governments of different countries and world-renowned dignitaries and celebrities have frequently come to visit the hospital. Their visits have been of great benefit to the hospital in the improvement of its medical care, research and administration. SCMC has established friendly relationship and collaboration with over 10 medical institutions of overseas countries and regions, and collaborative programs with over 20 world-famous children’s hospitals of overseas countries and regions based on the mutual development and benefit.

SCMC, the location of which used to be a paddy field, has now become a world-famous general pediatric facility. The road that the hospital has traversed also points to its future course of continuous reform and exploration.
