Xin Hua
Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of
Medicine, established in 1958 after the founding of New China in
1949, is a modern comprehensive teaching hospital, integrating
functions of providing medical care, surving as an educational base
and conducting scientific researches. It has been awarded seven
times the title of “Model Unit" of Shanghai, three times the title
of “National Advanced Collective“ and was granted the title of
Class A Hospital at the Tertiary Level(the highest class) in 1993
and honored as Children-friendly Hospital in 1995.
The hospital has a complete range of disciplines and
specialies with special features. The hospital accommodates 1,728
beds (including 500 beds at its branch institution --Shanghai
Children’s Medical Center); 47 clinical departments, 66
specialties, 8 university-level research laboratories, and 6
medically-related technological service platforms including Heart
Intervention Diagnosis and Treatment Unit, Endoscopic Diagnostic
and Treatment Center, Excimer Laser Diagnostic and Treatment
Unit,WHO Collaborative Center for Child Growth and
Development,National Research Center for Neonatal Screening and
Genetic Metabolic Diseases,Shanghai Diagnosis and Treatment Center
for Hearing Disorder in Children. The number of OPD and emergency
patient visits reaches 2.2 million a year; the total admissions of
inpatients (person/time)are over 40,000 every year; the number of
operations on inpatients is nearly 20,000 per year. With superior
comprehensive professional strengths, the departments of
Cardiology, Digestive Medicine, Neurology, General surgery,
Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Orthopedics,
Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and
Head-Neck Surgery, Dermatology and Clinical Nutrition Center are
the key programs supported respectively by the Ministry of
Education, the Ministry of Health, Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai
Health Bureau and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
The hospital has gained 21 prizes granted by Shanghai Municipality
for its clinical medical achievements.
The hospital is a teaching hospital of Shanghai
Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and has 3000 staff members;
among them, 83 percent are medical professionals, and 46 percent
have middle or senior professional titles. The hospital now has 42
tutors supervising doctoral students in 8 doctoral programs and the
post-doctorate mobile stations, and 181 tutors for graduate
students working for the master's degree in 25 master-degree
programs.
The hospital boasts two bases of clinical
medicine: Xin Hua Hospital itself and its branch Shanghai
Children’s Medical Center. It is home to 2 Shanghai municipal-level
clinical medical centers: Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for
Pediatric Cardiovascular Diseases and Shanghai Clinical Medical
Center for Pediatric Surgical Rectification; 3 municipal-level
research institutions: Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research,
Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Congenital Heart diseases,
Shanghai Developmental Biology Laboratory and Shanghai Environment
Science and Child Healthcare Laboratory; and 3 colleges of clinical
medicine under Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine:
Pediatric Medical College, Xin Hua College of Clinical Medicine and
Pediatric Continuing Educational College.

at RMB 0.37 billion. The highlights include Shanghai’s first DSCT,
3 MRI sets, 4 CT scanners, 3 DSA sets, 2 ECT sets, liner
accelerator, Lower- Hyperbaric oxygen chamber, fully automatic
biochemical analyzer, fully automatic protein analyzer, flow
cytometer and a variety of testing, monitoring, imaging diagnostic

Weiguo
Prof. Xu Weiguo, chief physician, professor of management
science and PhD supervisor, is currently the president of Xinhua
Hospital and deputy director of Department of Medical Nutrition of
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He has long been
engaged in research on hospital management, both theoretically and
for practical purposes, and has gained extensive expertise in the
field. He has headed 4 key research programs concerning important
issues in hospital management granted by Shanghai Education
Commission, including "Strategic Study on the Comprehensive Reform
of Operating Mechanism for Public Hospitals during the
Transformation Period " and " Study on the Nurturing of Talented
People in Modern Hospitals ", and has published 41 articles on the
state core journals like "Chinese Journal of Hospital
Administration" and "Chinese Hospital Management". He has addressed
international and domestic academic conferences many times on such
topics as "Hospital Development Strategy and Performance
Management", "Harmonious Hospital and Innovative Management",
"Hospital Personnel Management and the Management of Personnel",
"Modern Hospital Administrative Structure and Professionalized
Management ". Prof. Xu Weiguo has overseas educational background
and work experiences, having undertaken further study and practical
training in hospital management at San Antonio University Hospital.
In recent years he has served as a leading member in several
academic institutions including Chinese Hospital Management
Society, Chinese Hospital Presidents, Shanghai Research Society of
Rehabilitation Management, Shanghai Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease Section and Yangpu District Medical Association, and as
chief editor or editorial board member in well-reputed journals
including "Shanghai Medical Journal"and "Chinese Journal of
Practical Internal Medicine", and won prizes of the Shanghai Health
Service Management Award for his outstanding work. Prof. Xu Weiguo
has persistently carried out medical, teaching and research work,
doing pioneering work in the Department of Respiratory Medicine and
especially focusing on the study of chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD). In medical and clinical field, he has directed 5
key programs supported by Shanghai Science and Technology
Commission on such topics as "the Study of the Effect of the
Adaptor and Transcription Factor--Aiolos of T-cell Activation on
the Pathogenesis of Asthma " and the "Study of Body Composition of
the Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the
Means of Skeletal Muscle Ubiquitin - Proteasome ", etc. He has
published 35 papers as the first author, and authored or coauthored
6 academic books. He is a committed and devoted educator, teaching
students in the specialties of clinical medicine, medical nutrition
