The third bilateral seminar on cancers jointly held by SJTUSM and the University of Toronto

On Nov. 23, 2011, the third bilateral seminar on cancers jointly organized by SJTUSM and the University of Toronto was held in Jide Building of SJTUSM. The six-member delegation headed by Christopher Paige, deputy president in charge of scientific research of the Hospital Group of Toronto University, Canada, attended the seminar. Dean of SJTUSM Chen Guoqiang, who attended the seminar and made the opening speech, expressed warm welcome to the visiting guests. In his speech, Mr. Chen recalled the development of cooperation between the two sides over the years, and expressed satisfaction with the remarkable results in such areas as student exchanges, and cooperation in scientific research, using this opportunity to thank the friends from Toronto University for their unrelenting efforts to promote such cooperation. He expressed the hope that the experts present would exchange their opinions at the seminar and make new contributions to furthering scientific cooperation.

In the seminar which centered on lung cancer, the Chinese and Canadian experts made excellent speeches, and exchanged opinions on the prevention of lung cancer, the suppression of growth of lung cancer cells, lung transplantation, etc. in a deep-going way. At present, lung transplants are rarely done in China, while in Canada, the conditions for lung transplants are relatively mature, with more cases performed, thus in a position to offer the Chinese experts valuable experience.

On the morning of Nov. 24, the Toronto University delegation visited the SJTUSM-affiliated Chest Hospital, received by Mr. Han Baohui, deputy director of the hospital. The delegation had a meeting with staff members from different sections of the hospital, including experts from pneumology, thoracic surgery, pathology, radiotherapy, radiology, TCM combined with western medicine, clinical medical center of lung tumor, and research institute of oncology, and exchanged academic information with them. Afterwards, accompanied by Mr. Han Baohui, the delegation made a tour around the section of thoracic surgery and the ICU, during which Canadian experts carefully examined pathological reports and X-ray pictures of several severely ill patients, and gave their frank opinions on the cases concerned.

In the afternoon, Professor Henry Mann, dean of the College of Pharmacology of Toronto University, visited the department of pharmacology of SJTUSM; he held discussions with Mr. Chen Hongzhuan, deputy dean of SJTUSM and head of the department, and the young teachers and researchers, informing each other of their research work, and was shown around the laboratories. Mr. Chen also exchanged views with Christopher Paige on the construction of the joint research center.

Since 2009, SJTUSM and Toronto University have jointly held two seminars on tumors and one special exchange on matters of common interest. The discussions and exchanges involved various areas of clinical and basic research, including cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, cancers of maxilla and face, ovarian cancers, blood cancers, etc. which led to several letters of intent to cooperate and the joint application to Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology for an international cooperative project. The current seminar has extended the cooperation into the area of lung cancers, and provided new opportunities of academic exchange on topics that lung experts of both sides are interested in. It is our hope that in the near future both sides will establish fruitful cooperation in this area.
