The key laboratory of endocrine & metabolic diseasesby Ministry of Health of China is one of the most importanttraining places for the specialists of endocrinology and metabolismand has held 27 terms of training courses for nation-wideendocrinologist fellows entrusted by the Ministry of Health ofChina. In 2001 the discipline was awarded as Shanghai ClinicalCenter for Endocrine & Metabolic Diseases with a strictassessment by Shanghai municipal govement, which indicated that thedevelopment of the discipline came into a new stage. During thecontinuous development, the discipline has always insisted thatmedical care, medical education and medical research be paid equalattention. The discipline has become one of the most principaldomestic centers of endocrinology and metabolism, formed its owncharacteristics in many aspects and developed closely up to theinternational top level. The discipline has established thediagnosis and treatment criteria and procedures for many endocrinediseases. Some novel therapeutic education protocol has beenpracticed for diabetic patients. Some comprehensive approaches havebeen established to detect diabetic retinopathy , nephropathy,neuropathy and cardiovascular disorders. Continuous blood glucosemonitoring systems and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion bypump have been applied for intensive care of diabetic patients. Inrecent years, we have have focused on clinical and research worksin endocrine tumors and hereditary endocrine diseases and formednew research orientations.

Ning Guang,the head of Shanghai Institute of Endocri and Metabolic Diseases,and Shanghai Clinical Center for Endocrine and MetabolicDiseases, the director and professor of department of Endocrine andMetabolism in Ruijin Hospital, the Vice President of RuijinHospital affiliated Shanghai Jiaotong University Medical School. DrNing received his MD and PhD from Shanghai Second MedicalUniversity. He had been trained as Postdoctoral Fellow for 2years in Baylor Medical College, USA. Dr. Ning has been focusing onthe study of endocrine and metabolic diseases, such as type 2diabetes and insulin resistance syndrome, pituitary and adrenaldisorders, hereditary endocrine and metabolic diseases caused bysingle gene mutation, as well as the research on pathogenesis ofendocrine related cancers, and the elucidation of Steroid ReceptorCoactivitor-3(SCR-3) gene structure and establishment of SRC-3 geneknockout animal model, etc. Dr. Ning has received more than 10grants and published more than 180 scientific papers inpeer-reviewed journals. He is on the editorial boards of severaljournals and the vice-chairman of the Chinese Endocrine Society,the China Group on Insulin Secretion , the member of the ChineseDiabetes Association.
